Hello! I’m Sophie Turner, a 29-year-old hotel manager living and working in the enchanting city of Zhangjiajie, Hunan Province. Originally from Sydney, Australia, I made the move to Zhangjiajie nearly three years ago, drawn by its breathtaking landscapes and the chance to be part of the hospitality industry in one of China’s most spectacular tourist destinations. Since then, Zhangjiajie has become more than just a workplace — it’s a place where I’ve grown professionally and personally, and a hub for my deep passion for travel and exploration.
Working in hotel management here is both exciting and fulfilling. I oversee guest services, operations, and team management at a boutique hotel that caters to travelers from around the world. My role is about creating memorable experiences — blending warmth, efficiency, and a touch of local culture to ensure every visitor feels welcome and inspired. Hospitality is more than a job to me; it’s about connection and storytelling. Each guest brings a unique journey, and helping them discover the magic of Zhangjiajie is a privilege I treasure.
What makes living in Zhangjiajie truly special is the unparalleled access to nature’s wonders right on my doorstep. The towering sandstone pillars, misty forests, and winding rivers aren’t just scenery for tourists — they’re a daily source of awe and inspiration. My love for travel has taken on a new dimension here. Instead of just ticking off famous landmarks, I approach every outing as a chance to immerse myself in the environment, learning from the landscape and the local communities who have lived here for centuries.
My travel philosophy is deeply experiential. I prefer to slow down, listen, and observe. Hiking through the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, I pay attention not only to the breathtaking views but also to the flora, the wildlife, and the subtle changes in weather and light. These details connect me to the place in a way that photos alone can’t capture. For me, travel is about becoming part of the landscape, even if just for a moment.
Beyond Zhangjiajie’s famed pillars, I love exploring nearby villages and lesser-known trails where the rhythm of life is slower and traditions are strong. Visiting local markets, trying homemade specialties, and chatting with residents offer insights into how people adapt to and celebrate their stunning surroundings. These experiences deepen my appreciation for sustainable tourism and remind me why responsible hospitality matters.
Food is an integral part of both my work and my travels. Hunan cuisine, known for its bold, spicy flavors, is a delight I never tire of. I enjoy discovering small family-run restaurants tucked away from the main tourist routes, savoring dishes like smoked pork with dried long beans or spicy river fish. Sharing meals with locals and colleagues is a way to connect and recharge after busy days.
Living and working in Zhangjiajie has also taught me the importance of balance. Managing a hotel in a popular tourist spot can be demanding, but the surrounding nature offers refuge and renewal. I make time for yoga and meditation, often outdoors amid the fresh mountain air, which helps me stay centered and energetic. The natural world here is not just a backdrop but an active participant in my daily life.
One of my most unforgettable trips was a sunrise hike to Tianmen Mountain. Watching the first light spill over the sea of sandstone pillars, wrapped in morning mist, was a profoundly humbling experience. It reminded me that travel is not only about seeing but about feeling — about moments that stay with you and shape how you see the world.
Looking ahead, I’m excited to continue growing in my hospitality career while advocating for eco-friendly practices that preserve Zhangjiajie’s natural beauty. I also hope to explore more of China’s diverse landscapes, carrying with me the lessons and perspectives this incredible place has given me.
I’m Sophie Turner — a hotel manager, traveler, and passionate learner. Living in Zhangjiajie has enriched my life beyond measure. Every day here offers a new story, a new path, and a new chance to connect with nature and people. And I’m just beginning to uncover all the wonders this world has to offer.
